Greetings! This is Mr. Wedge, principal at Benton Elementary. We are excited to welcome our first through sixth graders tomorrow. Our Kindergarteners will begin on September 3rd. If you haven't yet, please remember to let your child's teacher know their end-of-day arrangements. Also, your child will come home with a Welcome Packet that needs to be completed as soon as possible.
Our parking lot had major renovations over the course of the summer. As you get used to the change, please be patient and remember that Safety comes first. Arrival and dismissal will take longer than normal. Our school doors open promptly at 8:15. Our front parking lot is now for community and staff parking. So, if you plan on taking more than a few seconds to drop of your child, please park in the front parking lot. The parent-drop off loop is for families that are dropping their child off and immediately leaving. The vehicle entrance is an "entrance-only". Vehicles must exit at the end of the parent drop-off loop.
We look forward to our first day back to school tomorrow!
Reserve your Benton PTO sponsored Sea Dogs tickets by this Friday, May 10th. Time is running out!

Good afternoon, this is Mr. Wedge. I was recently notified that Maine Drilling and Blasting will begin ledge removal on the new school site beginning this Friday during school hours. I want to assure you that there is no safety issue for our students, nor will there be a disruption to the school day. Maine Drilling and Blasting has shared the following information: The school office will be notified 1 hour prior to blasting. In addition, we will hear three long horn blasts 5 minutes before the blast, 2 long horn blasts two minutes before the blast, and one long horn blast signaling that it is all clear. Please be aware that students and staff may experience low levels of ground vibration.
Good afternoon,
Mark your calendars: The Benton Elementary Holiday Concert has been rescheduled for January 9th, at 6:30 PM.
Tomorrow is a scheduled early dismissal. Benton students will be dismissed at noon. Thank you and have wonderful Holiday Break!
The learning process often involves teaching others about what we know. At Benton Elementary, Aubri Brooks and her braille teacher, Ms. Erin, recently created a braille activity for Mrs. Cloutier’s sixth-grade class. Aubri taught her classmates how to identify and read the braille alphabet, then she challenged each classmate to find a book she had personalized with their name. Our sixth graders were thoroughly engaged in this activity and enjoyed learning about a different form of communication.
On the evening of Monday, October 23 Benton Elementary Reading Recovery/Title I Literacy team hosted a family literacy night for many of our first and second-grade Title I students. Adults learned about the roles of teachers, parents, and students receiving Reading Recovery and Title I lessons. There was an emphasis on the home-school partnership to accelerate literacy learning for students. During this time, the children went with a couple of teachers to enjoy several read-alouds. Smiles and laughter filled the cafeteria when families came back together for engaging literacy activities, including building an interactive Pigeon bulletin board near our main office. Each family went home with a 20th-anniversary edition copy of Mo Willems' Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, which included a game in the back.
First graders at Benton Elementary have been studying the four seasons. Last week they visited the L.C. Bates Museum to learn how clouds are formed and the role the Sun plays in creating our seasons. Students also visited with John Meader of Northern Stars Planetarium, joining him inside his inflatable planetarium to learn about types of clouds and how the Sun affects our weather and seasons on Earth. These young scientists also viewed some of the constellations they can find in Maine’s night sky.
Last spring, Benton Elementary third graders participated in the Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program. Since 2002, this company has been providing free cabbage plants to third graders across the country, with a mission to teach kids where their food comes from and inspire a love of vegetable gardening. Each third grade student was sent home with their own cabbage plant, and they were encouraged to plant it and watch it grow throughout the summer. This fall, eight incoming fourth graders returned with their harvest. The largest cabbage, raised by Lexi Day, weighed an astounding 14 pounds! Congratulations to this group of next-generation gardeners!
Flu Vaccine Clinic paperwork is coming home with your child today. The Benton Elementary clinic will be held on Tuesday, October 24th. Please return to the school by Monday, October 16th.
Second graders at Benton Elementary have been learning about the life cycle and metamorphosis of a butterfly. Kaitlyn Paulette’s students observed a caterpillar as it created its chrysalis and transformed into a beautiful monarch butterfly. Last week they released their winged friend and all waved farewell as it fluttered out into the world.
At Benton Elementary, Rachel Carpenter’s sixth graders are participating in weekly “Teamwork Tuesday” activities to practice working together as effective teams. Recently students worked in small groups to discover things they have in common with one other, recording each on separate index cards. Next each team used their collections of cards, along with their engineering skills, to see who could build the tallest tower. Teammates collaborated, got creative, and had loads of fun, all while strengthening the bonds of their classroom community.
Benton Elementary Parent/Teacher Conference sign-ups will be going home with your child today. Please sign up for conferences, which will be held during the evenings of October 4 and 5. We will have our Scholastic Book Fair, Darling's Ice Cream Truck for a Cause, a Mum Sale, and other events going on in the building. We hope to see you there!
It’s harvest time for Benton Elementary’s Garden Club! Librarian Amanda Delorie has gathered vegetables and prepared several tasty treats for students, including beets, tomatoes, peppers, peas, green beans, and eggplant. This week fifth graders enjoyed Mrs. Delorie’s homemade pesto, made with fresh basil from the school’s garden. Yum!
