Welcoming Sunflowers Greet Visitors at LJHS Library

As the Teacher-Librarian at Lawrence Junior High School Library, my goal is to have a welcoming space for students, staff, and community. The library is a place to foster curiosity and grow. Larissa Davis’s generous gift and inspiring art invites us all to shine.

Artist’s note from Larissa Davis

Several summers ago we grew sunflowers for the first time. By August they were towering over me while swaying their hellos as I walked in the garden. I was inspired by their beauty and how they could grow without toppling over. I couldn’t stop thinking about them, so I took a huge canvas up to the field with my paints and stood outside barefoot painting these glorious beings. Having recently come to deeply appreciate the wisdom nature offers us, I felt these sunflowers had a new message for me.
As I painted, words and phrases came to me about the value of  having deep strong roots, standing in integrity with who I am, and reaching high while standing tall! I believe words have the power to change how we feel, so I included these messages from the sunflower into the painting. One of my favorite phrases from the painting is, “Inside of you there is a sun, it’s the same in everyone.”
Fast forward to August 2024 when Debra Butterfield found my booth at the Brunswick Outdoor Art Festival. I learned that she was starting a new position at your library, and the posters she purchased were to create a welcoming environment for the kids. At that moment inspiration hit. Before I knew it, I was telling her about this mural I thought would be perfect for her library.
Debra wrote to me sharing how the painting has impacted the space, the students, and others in the school. I feel a deep humble gratitude that this painting created in a field at a time that feels so distant from this moment has found its home. Its purpose is supporting your amazing kids. Thank you for this opportunity to be part of your school!
