Judy King, of Unity, Maine, has been making gingerbread houses for more than forty years. She gifted Lawrence Junior High School and the community with a Lawrence Public Library gingerbread house to share her joy with others. Debra Butterfield, Teacher-Librarian, is new to MSAD #49 this year. On the day of her interview, she visited the Lawrence Public Library and was in awe of the gem. She believes her job is to promote students being library patrons at school and in the community. Butterfield has enjoyed learning about the treasured moments people have had at Lawrence Public Library and looks forward to creating her own there. The gingerbread house will be delivered to Lawrence Public Library on Friday, December 20 for viewing.
About the Artist
King started making gingerbread houses to have a tradition with her three children. She continues to enjoy creating with grandchildren, friends, and neighbors. Her design inspiration comes from local landmarks including lighthouses, libraries, and farms. Over the years King has experimented with different frosting and gingerbread recipes and often failed in many attempts. Through continued research, she found recipes that worked for her artistic expression. Her husband, Dr. Ivan King, has been her number one helper assisting with the shaping of the gingerbread and ideas for the projects. For King, creating gingerbread houses is Christmas, and it sparks her creativity.
